Meet our honorees:
Tara and James Caroll

Over the past seven years, Tara and James Caroll have made a positive impact on the Cold Spring community through their entrepreneurship and dedication to increasing the diversity of commerce along the village’s historic Main Street. In 2013, the Caroll’s opened Old Souls, an outdoor equipment store, providing high-quality hiking and camping gear to locals and visitors alike. Three years later, they opened Barber & Brew with partners Richard and Elizabeth Corio. Barber & Brew is a classic barbershop and 10-tap craft beer bar.

Both businesses—only a few doors apart—are located in Cold Spring’s nationally recognized historic district; and they serve as leading models for successfully implementing modern business ideas within historic buildings. Moreover, Old Souls connects directly with the PHM’s 2021 Spring Exhibition, A History of Recreation and Leisure in Putnam County. The history of recreation in the Hudson Valley is long and varied, and always evolving with the next wave of adventure and leisure seekers; Tara and James have trail-blazed their way into the next chapter of that history.

Through their work together, Tara and James have been able to give back to the planet that they love to explore. As a member of Patagonia’s 1% for the Planet initiative, which calls on businesses of all sizes to donate 1% of gross sales to environmental protection organizations, Old Souls is able to support local organizations with boots on the ground right here in the Hudson Valley. Tara and James are also involved with the NY/NJ Trail Conference, Glynwood, Hudson Highlands Land Trust, and Haldane School Foundation.
