History Hike at Lake Oscawana

History Hike at Lake Oscawana, with a special focus on the Dunderburg Road Neighborhood and Abele Park.

Did you ever wonder about the history of your neighborhood? There’s probably more there than meets the eye!

Dunderberg Road, along Lake Oscawana, started its life as the route to the once famous Dunderberg Lodge, a hunting and fishing destination for aficionados as far away as New York City. Later it became a hotel and restaurant where dining and dancing took place on many a moonlit night on beautiful Lake Oscawana. All was well until the owner Harry Gorley was found murdered behind the barroom.

Its final incarnation came when a former Camp Oscawana child, Pierre “Pops” Coleman bought it in the 1940s and renamed it Coleman’s Landing. It burned down in 1951.

Dunderberg Road grew with the hotel’s business over the years. Houses and stores sprang up, even other hotels and restaurants. Businessmen\developers such as Charles Abele and William Lawson profited from the communities that they built. The resort industry left a mark on the history of Putnam Valley.

Join us for a guided History Hike of these very places and learn the unique stories behind what you are viewing.
