*A Hudson River Valley Ramble Event.

Join the Putnam History Museum on this guided History Hike exploring the rich history of Fahnestock State Park and the Denny Mine. Throughout the 18th-19th-and 20th centuries, hundreds of workers throughout the Highlands mined for iron embedded in the well-known Reading Prong.

We will touch on the discovery of iron within the park, the role the mines played during the Civil War, and the last-ditch effort to revive iron mining at Fahnestock in the 1890s by Thomas Edison. Fahnestock State Park is home to numerous abandoned iron mines, and on this tour we will explore the area surrounding the Denny Mine. On the way, you will learn about the engaging history of iron mining in Putnam County. This hike will take about 90-120 minutes.

Appropriate footwear and active/outdoor attire strongly suggested. Participants will be required to sign a release before the event.
