Colonial constructions, ancient sacred sites or UFO bases? We will seek out three mysterious stone chambers of unknown origin or date of construction, located on NYC watershed lands. We’ll also visit a balanced rock and the enigmatic Hawk Rock glacial erratic. Led by David A. Steinberg, author, “Hiking the Road to Ruins.” Steinberg’s book is available for purchase here: https://www.amazon.com/Hiking-Road-Ruins-Adventures-Abandoned/dp/0813540356

Notes: Foot trails and eroded abandoned roads, one intense hill (15 minute climb).

  • Difficulty: Moderate (one strenuous hill)
  • Length: 4 mile loop, 4 hours
  • Abridged option: We will be visiting the stone chambers first. Hikers will have the option to leave after seeing the chambers. The abridged hike will take approximately 2 hours round-trip.
  • Additional equipment: Hikers and especially parked cars should have a FREE DEP permit, available here: https://tinyurl.com/2p8knxvb
  • Please review this Group Access Permit Release Form: https://tinyurl.com/bddax623
  • Plan to carpool—parking is limited at the trailhead.
  • Bring bug spray!
  • Meet at 1090 RT 52, Carmel (Dunkin Donuts). We will consolidate any vehicles where possible, and then drive over to the trailhead together at the Horse Pound Brook Unit. If you are coming with friends or family, please plan to car pool over – parking is limited.
